Figure 1: The distinctive flower-web design of HyPak maximizes void fraction.
When your bottleneck is vapor handling capacity rather than separation efficiency, HyPak (High Flow Ring) is the ultimate solution. Featuring a unique double-shear, flower-shaped internal web, HyPak creates highly efficient flow channels that minimize resistance. It delivers the lowest pressure drop of any random packing, making it essential for atmospheric crude columns, quench towers, and debottlenecking revamps.
This guide explains how to specify and install HyPak to achieve maximum throughput without flooding.

Choosing between HyPak and Pall Rings depends on your capacity requirements. Here is the performance showdown:
| Feature | HyPak (High Flow Ring) | Metal Pall Ring | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity (Throughput) | Very High (+20%) | High | HyPak for revamps |
| Pressure Drop | Ultra Low | Low | HyPak for vacuum |
| Fouling Resistance | Excellent | Good | HyPak for dirty feeds |

HyPak is often used in towers over 2 meters in diameter. At this scale, wall flow becomes significant. Do not rely solely on the packing for mixing. Install liquid redistribution pans or chimneys every 5-6 meters of packed height.
In quench towers, temperatures can fluctuate rapidly. Carbon steel HyPak may experience oxidation and weakening. For services above 400°C, upgrade to stainless steel 304 or 410 to prevent structural failure of the thin webs.
Because HyPak has such low resistance, a very deep bed can sometimes lead to maldistribution if not supported properly. Ensure the support plate has at least 70% open area to match the packing's low-pressure-drop characteristics.
